The onshore wind specialist said on Monday (22 July) that the N169/5.X turbine was tailored for US onshore wind conditions with less turbulence and typically low and medium wind speeds.

The N169/5.X is a part of Nordex’s Delta4000 platform. It has a rotor diameter of 169 metres and a power rating up to 5.5 megawatts.

The German manufacturer hinted at plans to unveil a new turbine specifically designed for the US market and associated wind conditions earlier this year.

The turbine launch follows the appointment of Manav Sharma as the new head of Nordex’s North America division, who replaced John McComas on 1 June.

“We already have our N163 and N175 variants offering for land constrained and some grid constrained sites in multiple configurations. The N169/5.X will allow us to address additional customer needs in grid constrained sites,” Sharma said on Monday.

Nordex currently has more than 8.7GW of capacity in installed turbines in the US.

The company said it planned to take advantage of the tax credits associated with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) by making the the N169/5.X  — as well as the N163 turbine — at its plant in West Branch, Iowa.

Nordex recently said production at the plant would soon restart after a prolonged suspension. Production of the N169/5.X is scheduled to start in 2026.
